Many of you have already heard that we’ve added support for the iPad with Retina Display (and iPad Mini) for. And while the iPad might seem like it would be easier than the iPhone to take pictures, in some cases it’s not.

In today’s tips and tricks video, we’ll show you how to turn on voice recognition in ZoomReader to aid your picture taking on the iPad. Since you’ll need both hands to hold the device steady, speaking to ZoomReader will make accurate OCR results much easier to achieve.

Then came the big, yet short-lived, disappointment – many apps are only partially accessible for low vision use. What do I mean by that? In many cases, the app developer has failed to properly name all of the buttons that appear in the app. So when you place your finger on a button, instead of VoiceOver identifying the actual purpose of the button, it will simply say “Button”.

For example, in the app called “Places”, I cannot select the “Coffee” button versus the “Bars” button because VoiceOver does not distinguish between the two – they’re both read aloud as “button”. But now with iOS 5, there is a way to get around this problem – you can create your own custom labels – and it’s easy! Many of you have had questions about how to take a picture, or what the best way to use in a given situation. Today I’m going to give you some tips and show you how you should be taking pictures of everyday items. First, a few basic rules of thumb that you should always follow when using ZoomReader: 1. You can download any updates by opening the App Store app on your phone and tapping the Updates icon. Frame up the entire subject matter in the camera’s view. Whether it’s a document, business card, or a menu, make sure you take a picture of the entire thing.

Experiment using the various flash options. Specifically, using the “Light On” mode can improve OCR results.

You can set this option by tapping the Flash icon in the upper right hand corner and choosing your flash mode. Make sure the phone announces the correct orientation before taking a picture. If you’re holding your phone upright, ZoomReader will announce “Portrait,” if you move it so it’s facing sideways, it will say “Landscape.” If you’re in the wrong orientation, you might take a picture upside down, which won’t OCR correctly. Manually focus the camera. You can do this by tapping anywhere in the middle of the screen, do this right before you take the image.

When taking a picture, you may have a tendency to move the phone, keep two hands on the device holding it as still as you can prior to tapping the take picture icon. Continue reading to check out the tips for taking pictures of specific types of items.

What I did here was take our 10px white border and turned it into a 70px black border while cranking the radius up to 50% like we did in the last example.
